چکیده

Unlike most Arti cial Life studies, we use biological data to verify a hypothesis about control mechanisms. We recorded male cricket Gryllus bimaculatus calling song, built a robot with the hypothesised control mechanism for phonotaxis behaviour and veri ed that it could account for the behaviour by observing the robot doing phonotaxis to the real cricket song. Further, we present a set of robot experiments that show how frequency dependence of the ear directionality in crickets can account for frequency selectivity in phonotaxis. Further, the results suggest that this mechanism also might account for part of the female choice behaviour.

Influence of Electric Bulb Light Color and Type on the Attraction of Two Spotted Cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer)

Aside being a key nocturnal Agricultural pest, the two spotted cricket is an important source of protein for humans and livestock. While control is largely by synthetic pesticides, collection is majorly through hand picking and pouring of water into their burrows. In this study, we determined their phototactic response to LED and incandescent bulb light of different colours. An experiment was s...

New microsatellite loci isolated from the field cricket Gryllus bimaculatus characterized in two cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and Gryllus campestris.

We have developed a new set of 27 polymorphic markers for each of two cricket species, Gryllus bimaculatus and Gryllus campestris. Initially, 14 published G. bimaculatus loci were tested in G. campestris; however, only five loci were polymorphic. Therefore, we isolated an additional 50 new microsatellite loci from G. bimaculatus and tested these in both species. In a minimum of 20 individuals, ...

Body-enlarging effect of royal jelly in a non-holometabolous insect species, Gryllus bimaculatus

Honeybee royal jelly is reported to have body-enlarging effects in holometabolous insects such as the honeybee, fly and silkmoth, but its effect in non-holometabolous insect species has not yet been examined. The present study confirmed the body-enlarging effect in silkmoths fed an artificial diet instead of mulberry leaves used in the previous literature. Administration of honeybee royal jelly...

Expression patterns of hedgehog, wingless, and decapentaplegic during gut formation of Gryllus bimaculatus (cricket)

We observed expression patterns of hedgehog (hh), wingless (wg), and decapentaplegic (dpp) during gut development of Gryllus bimaculatus (the cricket), a typical hemimetabolous insect, and compared with those observed in Drosophila, a typical holometabolous insect. Gryllus hh(Gbhh) and Gbwg are expressed in both foregut and hindgut, while Gbdpp is expressed only in the hindgut: at the boundarie...

No Effect of Body Size on the Frequency of Calling and Courtship Song in the Two-Spotted Cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus

The relationship between body size and vocalization parameters has been studied in many animal species. In insect species, however, the effect of body size on song frequency has remained unclear. Here we analyzed the effect of body size on the frequency spectra of mating songs produced by the two-spotted cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus. We recorded the calling songs and courtship songs of male cri...
